Why the White Mountains of NH?

The White Mountains are beautiful and terrifying and awe-inspiring and frightening and peaceful – and all on the same hike. I have experienced hikes that have started out sunny with temperatures in the 70’s F that have changed to fog and sleet with temperatures in the 20’s F within a few hours (similar to Kenny’s first hiking experience in An Uncertain Grave). The White Mountains provide so much variety in physical scenery with steep rocky trails contrasting with gentle grassy slopes, unexpected sparkling streams and dismal smelly swamp areas, gorgeous groves of evergreens and wind-blasted ledges where only lichen grows, that it can function on its own as a separate character. I can hike the same trail multiple times and each hike can be an entirely different experience, depending on season and weather.
